MaxLinear Puma 9 Brings DOCSIS 4.0, Wi-Fi 8 and DDR5 to Cable Gateways
MaxLinear announced Puma 9 on September 28, 2026, a cable-gateway platform that supports DOCSIS 3.1, DOCSIS 3.1+ and DOCSIS 4.0 on a single system-on-chip. The company says Puma 9 can deliver up to 12 Gbps downstream in a DOCSIS 3.1+ configuration and is designed for gateways combining multi-gigabit cable access with Wi-Fi 8, edge-AI processing and DDR5 memory.
The platform is aimed at cable operators that want to introduce newer customer-premises equipment before completing a network-wide DOCSIS 4.0 transition. MaxLinear says the same Puma 9 hardware can be deployed on DOCSIS 3.1 networks and upgraded in the field as operator networks evolve.
Askey and Gemtek are developing gateways based on Puma 9. FRITZ! and Mediacom said they plan to evaluate the platform.
Puma 9 specifications and platform changes
MaxLinear's launch material identifies these capabilities:
| Area | Puma 9 detail |
|---|---|
| Cable standards | DOCSIS 3.1, DOCSIS 3.1+ and DOCSIS 4.0 on one SoC |
| D3.1+ downstream | Up to 12 Gbps |
| D3.1+ channels | Five OFDM channels |
| Memory | DDR5 support |
| Home networking | Designed to pair with Wi-Fi 8 connectivity |
| Compute | Edge-AI and personal-AI processing support |
| Security | Post-quantum cryptography readiness; secure-by-design positioning |
| Upgrade model | In-field transition from D3.1/D3.1+ toward D4.0 |
The DDR5 move is operationally relevant for gateway vendors because it reduces dependence on older memory generations as new CPE designs enter multi-year production cycles. MaxLinear describes Puma 9 as the industry's first DOCSIS platform with DDR5 compatibility; that is a vendor claim and should be evaluated as products based on the silicon reach qualification and deployment.
Puma 9 also extends MaxLinear's use of local processing in cable gateways. The company positions the compute capability for network optimization, troubleshooting and future personal-AI workloads. No general-purpose AI accelerator performance figure is part of the launch specification.
Why 12 Gbps in DOCSIS 3.1+ matters
The 12 Gbps figure applies to Puma 9's DOCSIS 3.1+ configuration. Subscriber service rates remain dependent on the operator's spectrum allocation, plant configuration, upstream network, gateway design and service tier.
The larger deployment implication is coexistence. Operators can qualify one CPE platform across D3.1, enhanced D3.1+ and D4.0 stages without requiring an immediate full-network D4.0 conversion for every new gateway. MaxLinear says this approach can reduce CPE cost by roughly 30% to 50% compared with alternative DOCSIS 4.0 solutions. That figure is vendor-reported and depends on the operator and competing design baseline.
MaxLinear's previous Puma 8 platform reached DOCSIS 3.1 Verified for Interoperability in CableLabs' early DOCSIS 4.0 certification process in May 2026. Puma 9 advances that roadmap with DDR5, higher D3.1+ capability and an architecture explicitly designed around field migration between cable generations.
Security and post-quantum readiness
MaxLinear says Puma 9 includes post-quantum cryptography readiness and is designed to support compliance work around NIST IR 8425A, the EU Radio Equipment Directive and the EU Cyber Resilience Act.
Those statements describe platform design goals and readiness. Certification and security of finished Puma 9 gateways will also depend on OEM firmware, device configuration, lifecycle support and operator deployment.
Deployment outlook
Puma 9 is currently a silicon-platform announcement with named OEM and operator interest. Askey and Gemtek are developing next-generation gateways around it, while FRITZ! and Mediacom are evaluating the technology. MaxLinear says additional product and partner announcements are expected during 2026.
For cable operators, the main technical proposition is a longer-lived CPE design that spans D3.1 through D4.0 while adding DDR5 and a path to Wi-Fi 8-era gateways. The practical test will come from OEM product qualification, CableLabs interoperability/certification milestones and commercial operator deployments.
